Mission Statement

Founded in 1995 as Columbus '96, site of the 1996 Olympic Softball Venue, the Columbus Sports Council (CSC) is a not-for-profit organization that strives to promote tourism through sporting events, creating a positive economic impact on the greater Columbus region.

When the world came to Columbus...
Yes, we were ready!

We have come a long way since that inaugural meeting of a dozen people in the fall of 1994 at the First Union meeting room. Mayor Frank Martin and his "Kitchen Cabinet" had set a winning effort in motion. He and several other community leaders secured Olympic Softball for Columbus. Following that inaugural meeting, the ball was firmly in Columbus '96 court to make it happen.

Two years, and 2,500 volunteers later, the first-ever Olympic softball competition took place here in Columbus, Georgia... and what a grand event it was!

Olympic softball and the multitude of events, leading to and surrounding the competition; such as Southern Celebration, Superball Classic, The Phenix City Amphitheater Legacy series of concerts, NCAA, ASA GHSA, and NSCA; launched Columbus on a new path that brought national and international visibility and some great experiences.

In addition, we have made many new friends! Team USA refers to Columbus as its "home away from home". Along with all of this, a new force emerged in our region. The SUPERSTARS Thousands of volunteers, from every walk of life, from Columbus, Phenix City, Fort Benning, Harris County, and throughout the region, came together. They were more than volunteers; they were ambassadors and marketers for our region. In short order, they became world famous for their Southern Hospitality - "Y'ALL COME BACK!"

These volunteers made great things happen. We could not buy, for any amount of money, what they provided. The Superstars broke down all types of cultural, economic, and neighborhood barriers. There were many first-time volunteers, and many who gave their precious vacation time to be a part of the Olympic effort. We cannot thank them enough. There is no doubt volunteers can move mountains... The Superstars moved the world!

All Sports Council events provide exciting opportunities to volunteer in areas such as parking, ticket sales, security, operations, and hospitality. Our volunteers are the driving force behind the success of these events. We not only need, but also would enjoy having you join us at our various Sports Council games and events.

If you are interested in volunteering, please call (706) 660-1996, or complete the form here.
